Learn how community colleges are increasing their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

Many community colleges are known for having diverse student populations.  However, this hasn’t made them complacent, as evidenced by the fact that many colleges reach beyond their campuses to address cultural clashes in their communities.  More and more two-year colleges are cultivating an on-campus culture that promotes inclusion, equity, and diversity.  Some are even demanding that their employees get on board.

One of the ways in which community colleges are being proactive about promoting diversity is by appointing someone to the role of chief diversity officer.  These administrators have a direct line to the college president and are charged with holding academic department accountable for being inclusive.

Some community colleges are also introducing programs to set expectations and priorities on campus.  For instance, faculty diversity internships increase diversity in the faculty ranks and inclusion advocate programs train faculty to interact with students of diverse backgrounds while recognizing and addressing any biases they might harbor.

While four-year university campuses have seen protest after protest relating to racial issues, community colleges have been able to avoid these issues due to their residential natures.  Because students are normally members of the community outside campus, they tend to be more active in social-justice issues so they can better their communities.

This is how community colleges across the country have been doubling their efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive campus atmosphere.  Looking for a consulting firm with experience working in higher education?  Then don’t hesitate to contact the professionals at McKnight Associates, Inc.  We are ready to offer you hands-on human resources consulting for colleges, universities, medical centers, and organizations of all sizes.
