Facts to dispel the misconception that community colleges are second-class institutions.
Despite the growing popularity of community colleges, there is still a negative stigma against these higher education institutions. This stigma is harmful not only for community colleges themselves but also for the students that attend and graduate from them. Here are some facts that dispel the misconception that community colleges are second-class institutions.
- More Students Attend Community Colleges than Any Other Institution
In 2016, 46% of all undergraduates were enrolled in community colleges. Public four-year colleges and universities enrolled 31%; private non-profit four-year institutions enrolled 15%; and for-profit institutions enrolled 8%.
- Community Colleges Offer a Good Education at a Lower Price
Community colleges offer students better access to faculty, smaller class sizes, and a variety of post-secondary credentials. A community college education can prepare students for the workforce and offer a pathway to a bachelor’s degree. According to the College Board, average in-district tuition and fees charged by community colleges are $3,560. In contrast, public four-year institutions charged an average of $9,980 and private -non-profit four-year institutions charged an average of $34,700.
- Almost Half of Students with a Bachelor’s Degree Attended Community College
Data from 2015-2016 bachelor degree earners show that 49% of these graduates first enrolled at a community college.
Oftentimes, unfounded stigma and elitism prevent students from considering community colleges as a viable educational option.
